Newbie to GalCiv

Hi everyone, I am a total newbie, or at least 99 percent, I've heard of Gal Civ but never played it. I first saw this latest game when it was in alpha stages... then a year later now its ready, I'm glad I was busy during that year. I've read every dev blog posted by the developer about it, and these in depth dev blogs coupled with numerous illustrating screenshots throughout have convinced me to buy this game. I think of it as Rome Total War in space, but of course not with so many units fighting. I always wondered what a game like rome in space with ships would be like, now I'll get my chance, I have a short attention span, I like to learn quick and know what i am doing, but I think if I could cope with battlecruiser and X3 reunion I can cope with Gal Civ 2. Hopefully

so I've pre-ordered today.

p.s im from the caribbean

first caribbean player?

its a little to bad though that you cant control the space units.. what if when u attack the ships just turn around just to be ablo to shoot... then the enemy will kill you instantly

Maneuvering is completely irrelevant in GC2. The battle you see play out is simply a visual representation of the battle, which is decided instantly when you begin the fight based on the stats of teh ships involved. The battle is resolved like so:

Each ship on the attacking side fires its weapons at the strongest yet most vulnerable enemy ship. When an attack is done, the attacking ship rolls a value from 0 to its attack value in one damage class. The defending ship makes a corresponding roll from 0 to its defense of the given class, plus additional rolls of 0 to the square root of any other defenses it has. If the attacking ship has multiple weapon types, this process is repeated for each and combined into one report line in the battle viewer.

If the first emeny ship targeted is destroyed, your ships will begin to target the next one in line based on the same strength/vulnerability rating.

Once all ships on the attacking side have fired their weapons, the defending side returns fire in teh same manner. This continues back and forth until one side or the other is completely destroyed.

Here's an example of the attacking process for one ship:

Attacker ship has 4 Beam Attack, 2 Missile Attack, and no Mass Drivers.
Defender ship has no Shields, 4 Point Defense, and no armor.

Attacker fires Beam weapons, for 0 to 4 damage. Defender rolls 0-2 defense (shields + sqrt(P.D.) + sqrt(Armor)). The defender's value is subtracted from the attacker's calue, and if anything remains it is deducted from the defender's HP as damage.

Next, the attacker fires his Missiles, for 0-2 damage. The defender's point defense gets its full value here, and he has no other defenses, so his roll is 0-4. If he rolls poorly he may take some damage, but otherwise his defenses will easily intercept the missiles.

The attacker has no Mass Drivers, so his turn is done! The next attacker would proceed with his turn, or if there are no more attackers, the defender gets his.
