Master of Magic

Master of Magic

Still playing, and playing...

Just a thought about game replayability. I got Master of Magic shortly after it was released. Up until I installed Win XP it was on every machine that I owned starting with my 486 DX 50. Recently I was able to get it to run on XP with a combination of DOSbox and D-Fend. So lately I've been playing it yet again. This is even after I just got a Geforce 6800 CS/OC 256MB vid card.

The graphics are, shall we say, less than state of the art. But that game is probably my favorite strategy game of all times.

From what I've read about GalCiv2 it has all of the things that could make it another classic strategy game. Anybody else have a really old game that they still play, or would (if they could get it to run)?

If you loved MoM I would Highly recommend Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic. A top notch game! Pretty much has everything MoM had ...

I'll second that. Besides not having a random map generator this is the best turn based fantasy 4x game. But it somehow doesn't have the same appeal to me than MoM does. Strange that, really...

Dano

I have that game but I was kinda disappointed by it. Maybe just because I ran it on an older PC and every damn turn end took 4 minutes.
Maybe I should give it another try.
( By the way, AoW : Shadow Magic is the successor of AoW 2 : The Wizards Throne )

I loved the original Age of Wonders though. God that storyline was awesome.

AOW:SM has a random map generator. I believe AOW2 did as well. You are probably thinking of the first AOW game.

"Group #2 won't start on that until the end of 2007 and in the meantime will likely be on projects 1 or 3. If we get enough people, we also want to do a fantasy strategy game (we've long been in talks to do a sequel to a certain well known fantasy turn based game but there's been little movement on there due to some of the legal requirements involved to do it). Yeah I saw that too. Heh. I guess that they can't name the name because of those very "legal requirements" spoken of. But we can dream, can't we?

I thought X-Com Apocalypse was ok, but my fondest memories have to be with UFOD. Apoc was mostly good in the beginning, though I did lose interest maybe 2/3 of the way through it. I've never played 'Interceptor' or whatever it was called. You guys are extremely right, I would pre-order a UFOD remake so hard, if anyone ever announced it.

"Die Hoffnung stirbt zuletzt" means "Hope dies last".

I've become recently acquainted with VDMS for running Dos games in XP. Niice!

Should try it out if you don't like dos box.

Master of Magic's appeal is that it is so customizable while you play. Designing your heroe's magical artifacts, bespelling your heroes, units, cities, etc. AoW:SM never came close to that. SMAC is the game that comes closest to MoM in granting you the ability to design your own units and alter the terrain to suit your needs. Most players I know that like MoM also liked SMAC.

AoW, while fun and all, is not anything like MoM. It's just another HoMM.
