Stardock announced today that the award-winning 4X turn-based strategy title Galactic Civilizations II: Ultimate Edition has made its way to Steam. Stardock announced that after years of exclusivity to the Impulse digital distribution platform (now owned by GameStop) its titles would be making their way to a broader PC gaming audience. Fans can now purchase Galactic Civilizations II: Ultimate Edition (priced at $19.95) for 25 percent off through December 9 at http://store.steampowered.com/app/202200/.  Nominated for several “Strategy Game of the Year” awards in 2007, Galactic Civilizations II is the most epic turn-based space strategy game ever.

In Galactic Civilizations, it is the 23rd century and the known galaxy is at war. The Terran Alliance and their coalition are fighting a desperate interstellar war with the evil Drengin Empire and their ruthless allies. Behind the scenes, the precursor civilization called the Dread Lords pulls the strings on both sides. As leader of a galactic civilization, it is up to you to ensure the triumph of your civilization. Fight wars, design star ships, research new technologies, negotiate treaties and build an empire that will stand the test of time in this epic and timeless strategy game.

The first expansion title, Dark Avatar, greatly expands the gameplay of Galactic Civilizations II: Dread Lords. Dark Avatar introduces asteroid belts that can be mined for resources, unique planets that require special technologies to colonize, spies to conduct sabotage and destabilization (or used to protect your worlds from the same), new types of diplomatic treaties, an enhanced artificial intelligence engine, and much more.

The second expansion, Twilight of the Arnor, takes players into the year 2227 where the fire of war is consuming the galaxy thanks to the manipulations of the evil Dread Lords. But the remaining factions, led by the humans, have a plan to rid the galaxy of the Dread Lords once and for all. It’s up to you to conquer the galaxy and determine the fate of those around you.

The complete bundle is also available digitally through GameStop (www.impulsedriven.com), as well as direct from http://www.galciv2.com/Purchase.aspx.

Any way to activate our existing purchases of the GalCiv titles on Steam?  That would totally rock.  Any less reason to use Impu- er, "GameStop Powered by Impulse" is a good thing.

It is a great shame that we can't add our copies of GalCivII (& Sins) to Steam, it seems a missed opportunity.

Yeah its a bit disappointing, though I was expecting it. I think its the only game I ever played on Impulse and TBH I never much cared for the Gamestop stuff. But I'm more than happy to re-buy it because

1: All my games in 1 place.

2: Show support for Stardock/Using steam as a platform/showing valve its popularity.

3: Its only a tenner, I can't think of any other games I can buy for £10 that beat GC2!

So in my opinion its worth repurchasing, or if you're on the fence wait and see if it pops up on the Christmas sale or better yet, add it to your steam wish-list. Its a cheap enough game that someone will probably end up gifting it!

Gal Civ II is a great game. I've had it for years and bought all of the expansion packs as they were released. Are there any plans for the developers to look at a Gal Civ III? I'd be very happy to purchase it. I'm sure a lot of other Gal Civ II players share my desire to see the Gal Civ story continue.

I recall the good old days when Stardock followed its own laws it created.  I recall when every game they produced followed by the Gamer's Bill of Rights: http://www.gamersbillofrights.org/

Its a sad day when Steam takes control of such an incredibly great game like GalCiv2.  I refuse to use the DRM and 3rd party installs that Steam is riddled with, and sincerely hope that this is not a trend that will continue with future games.  I hope this is simply an easier way to get GalCiv out there since its so hard to find at retailers.

Well maybe with this the Modding community can rise up once again and do grate things as it once did back in mid 2000. I know its a bit low, with Steam but Steam and Valve has changed. Its not as tight on DRM anymore, and they have sets and standards yes, but as Gabe Newell put it. It is not the users fault for piracy, it is the distributors fault for not making it easy access. I hated steam when it first came out, but it has matured since its days since Half-Life 2 came out. If ya have a decent connection to internet it works wonders, its easy and fair. Much better then Impulse, it took me forever just to update Galciv 2. And if you look at it, Steam dose live up to the Gamers' Bill of Rights, Impulse not so much.

I could not have said it better.
