Hi,

I've just began my first game of GalCiv II and got a question:

My home system is quite away from any other systems, so my ships can't reach them. What do I have to research to add range to my engines? I have the feeling, that new engine techs just add speed. When I somehow got more range, do I have to refit all my ships?

Greetz,

Well, the range of a ship is linked with the number of life support modules you have added to it. Try to play with the ship designer

Or build contructors and put them on the border to extend the range further outwards

Range is based on two things:
-The "life support" systems on your ship
-The distance from your nearest planet or starbase

In the early game, the easiest way to extend your range is to plant a few starbases to extend your effective "supply area" Think of this range as the distance within which supply ships (I'm assuming there's a great deal of interstellar traffic that isn't represented by your main ships)can refuel your fleet. My first starbases are just refueling stations to extend the distance I can move.

As you get further into the game, start researching better and better Life Support technologies. The better your Life Support tech, the greater the range granted by one of the modules. You gain more range by adding additional modules to the ship. I had a medium sized ship that had a survey module, a good engine and a TON of life support modues to give me the biggest scouting range possible.

Engines impact speed, or number of squares traveled in a turn. You can have the best engine in the game, but with no life support you can't move very far from a planet or star base.

As you get better range, I suggest upgrading your ships to take advantage of new components, or build a new design and scrap the older ships and new ones come on the line.
