playing TA from the Ultimate Pkg just bought, two questions.

#1  should be playing something besides the TA expansion as -'m learning to play the game?

#2  - have met the Yor and the only Tech they have is "barren world colony" which could really use,  it's very early game, April 2227, so -i'm wondering how they got it since it's preTty deep in the tech tree?  any suggestions?  i have one spy ready to go out, can - steal it?  they seem unwilling to trade

Thanks

The Yor, like all races have a unique tech-tree for their race.

Getting Barren-Colonies much earlier than others is one of their special feats.

Some others get Aquatic-Colonies just as early.

Spies cannot steal techs. They are to sabotage their buildings by rendering them useless until a counter-spy is used. You can also just use them for intelligence or defensively if someone blocks your buildings. (The AIs usually gang up against whoever is dominant with their spies to cripple his economy as noone can get as many counter-spies as all the others can combined)

Oh, and there's no real need to play the non TA-Versions. It's pretty much the same but lacking some features... like those spies  or asteroid-fields for instance.

Another edit: You can steal techs by invading their planets. But if you invade their barren worlds without the tech and you get some other tech instead of that, those planets will really be useless for you until you get the tech.

Thanks for the info, that explains how they got it so fast.  I was looking at my tech tree and going "Wohaaa, how did they get that deep so fast!" but it makes sense now.

I guess I can just tech rush to that set of techs, i.e. barren, aquatic, and heavy, in order to pick up some of those planets, but is it likely that they will colonize them first?  There are a few that are barren and a couple with heavy grav, just wondering if it makes sense to beeline those techs to grab up those worlds at the cost of some of the other techs?

Found the Wiki last night so that is helping me with some insights too.  Thanks to everyone for helping a newbie out!
