I had a new ships model become available, that had superior defectors. The problem is, that I have not researched superior deflectors yet.

If the space used on the design does not account for the superior deflectors module, then it is effectively ship jewelery.

Basically, if it isn't giving you +1 to shields, it's not a functional component on the design, just a cosmetic leftover.
