Custom Ship Parts Question?

How would I import or move files to be used as extra's structure ship parts?

I have recently gotten into making my own ship parts using Kyro's ship hull mod and I would really love to be able to import the files to be used as structure ship parts as extras. Is there any way this can be done? Can anyone tell me how?

Any help or info on this would be tremendously appreciated!

Thanks.

If you mean parts you've combined through the in-game ship editor, no, you'd need to actually edit the models together in a 3D modeling app to actually use them as one single part on other ships. If you're speaking of other models that are available as hulls but not as parts, that's just a matter of adding the appropriate XML to the mod.

Thanks for your reply Kryo.

Would you know of a good freeware 3D modeling program that I could do this on?

Blender is the most popular free one out there, but I haven't used it personally so I don't know how robust its DirectX format import/export capability is.

Ok I looked up Blender and from what I understand it is opensource software constantly tested and updated. I'm going to try it and see what I can do with it. Who knows if I get good with it you may start seeing my custom ship parts here for download.
