So with Impulse over to Gamestop and the digital distribution competition no longer something we’re participating in we’ve developed a new digital updating client – Stardock Central (what’s old is new again).

But unlike the old “big” client, the new one is very…very simple.

image

(sorry for the lame screenshot, I’m caught up on my games on this new machine and haven’t installed any apps yet).

Your Stardock purchases will show up here once you login. Just pick what you want to install (or update) and press a button and it’ll use our massively fast CDN to install it (we have a long-term agreement with our CDN except now the only thing using its bandwidth is our stuff so the download speeds are kind of ridiculous – it’s like being the only guy on a 1 gigabyte line).

image

The new settings includes an option to have it simply update your software automatically.  So you can either choose to stick with older versions or always have it up to date.

..

OK, let’s say you don’t like to have to install a client at all.  That’s fine too.  You can update your software and games via the web as well:

image

Pick whether it’s software or games and it’ll look at your account, when you last updated, and off you go.  The installer will figure out what you need to install (i.e. if you have multiple machines with different versions) and off you go.

It’s designed to be as streamlined as possible.

UPDATE: TRY THE LATEST VERSION HERE:

All that SDC [v2] needs is one wee little option....IRC.

2 reasons.

1.  It'd be clever and convenient to get 'immediate' support/feedback re any problems that arise....

and FAR more importantly...

2. I could FINALLY 'retire SDC v1.

Just my 1.95 cents AUD which would be 2 cents USD these days ....

This would be great for those of us who don't really bother with IRC, being able to acess it easy would be a huge plus! I havent used the stardock #irc since you could access it through Impulse! (or was it via ready to play? IDR)

I'm guessing at this point, If Jafo's pestering  about IRC being in the new and improved SDC hasn't worked, nothing else will!

You can actually jump on IRC easily from here if you need to:

And I'm sure I can install any one of a squillion IRC clients too... but I'm still hanging in there with SDC Mark 1 which, fortunately has a very slightly different Icon to SDC v2 ....so I'm not entirely confused.

Jafo has been using it since Adam was a pup.  It's called TRADITION, dang it .....

Nope nope nope! Feature creep is a very real thing and I'm pretty sure adding IRC would be considered that

We will more than likely never add IRC directly into SDC. The best we'd probably do is link you to the page Rosco did above for support.

Why was the notice of release of this not made in a separate thread?  As this thread was really old I have not even been bothering with it and just happened to check it today to find out SDC was released.

Sorry about that ID. The error I am getting after installing SDC is

There was a problem trying to get the list of updated software:Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

Maybe you can advise.

Good question, LS. I would have thought SDC's long awaited arrival would have been front page news.

We are looking into that error now.

I'm making a new "Stardock Central Support" forum now, where the announcement will be made (and stickied).

It wasn't put out as a big release, the link was just posted in the thread for those who have been reading it.
