Hey, I'm looking to buy a new computer in the next couple days, and was wondering if anybody has any ideas as to where I should go.

The primary purpose is gaming, so I need it to have some decent gear.

Also, I just need the tower, as I am going to use a TV for my monitor.

I don't know a whole lot about what hardware I exactly need, so If you need any other information please ask.

I am willing to spend up to $500 if it's a very good deal, but I'd prefer around $300.

Thanks!

24" X 1.5 = 36".   1080 * 1.5 = 1620.  You get the same screen, it's just 1.5X bigger, and you sit further away.  I don't think the market is flocking to put dual 36" TV's on their office desks, though.

Ya I think we're saying the same thing.

Now if I could have a 36" screen at say around 2400 a couple of feet in front of me, that would be awesome, launch the rockets

I've been waiting for LED projectors to drop in price. Get a 1080 LED projector that goes from 30-300 inches and shoot it out the window at the building next door and use that for my screen.

I'm sure the neighbors won't mind so long as I keep the barnyard porn off their house.

Would you have a Batman screensaver, by any chance?

Quoting TheExile1,

Where did you buy it from? 500 dollars is around my budget.

Walmart.com, here's a link right to it:  http://www.walmart.com/ip/GUA103SE/15231528

I chose to use  tv instead of  monitor because I needed the new tv anyway and it seemed cheaper to go that way.

Of course. No projector based display system is complete without one.

Tut, tut!!!   Barnyard porn, eh???

Now where was that filmed, USA in the deep South, New Zealand, Tasmania.... where?

I had some aquarium porn once, but the missus made me get rid of it.

Said that I'd put it on on porpoise just so I didn't have to go to bed too early.

Goldfish nightmares?

More than that, the crocs out in the pool weren't too happy about it, either.

Alot of it depends on whether or not you're building the machine yourself. I just built a new gaming rig and only spent $800 on a machine that runs Crysis at very high, 4x AA, V-Sync, 1920x1080, at 45fps avg. Granted, I had a 1TB HDD and the OS already, so I didn't need to pay for those. The parts I got were motherboard, 8GB 1600 RAM, i5 2.8GHz quadcore processor, 2x5770 ATI cards in crossfire mode, full sized ATX case, H50 water cooler pump for the processor, wireless pci card, dvd drive, 750W PSU.

You could shave costs by getting just 1 graphics card and 1 set of RAM, reusing a HDD, dvd drive, and OS, not getting a wireless card, getting a smaller motherboard that doesn't support 2 pci-e 16x ports, smaller case, reusing a PSU (not recommended), getting a less expense processor, etc... I think I could have built an even cheaper machine that would run the games described above for around $500. Any less than that and the machine you're getting just almost isn't worth it as you will simply be getting a new one in a year or two.

I will say february had some great sales on. All of those parts would probably be around $1100 now, but there are other sales on at different times. Ultimately I lucked out when I built mine. I'd check newegg, microcenter, ebay, tigerdirect (even though they were far more expensive for the same parts when I was looking), maybe even amazon.

Adding to the discussion about monitors vs TVs, I've found that most "Primarily TVs" have issues with Text display. I have a 46" 1080p TV, but text looks aweful through HDMI (guess I haven't tried DVI). 36" probably wouldn't be that bad as the same resolution means the same number of pixels, means the pixels are smaller and will seem sharper. My 46" works great for the 360, but not quite what I wanted for PC gaming. So, I ended up buying a 23" monitor (updating from my old 19") for this machine. Brought my total cost up to about $1k for my entire system which I am quite happy with!

Quoting tetleytea,

Then it seems like 36" is where this starts to make more sense.  Compensate for the DPI by adding more I.  A hypothetical shrink of that 1080 DPI 36" TV down to 24" would get you 1620 DPI.  HD 36" are sitting around $550.  24" monitors are around $350.   But you get to reuse that 36" TV as a TV.  Might make sense depending on your setup.  But I can see how this would NOT catch on as a trend just yet.

hehe.... I am reminded of my former (idiot) boss who went out and bought 2 24" monitors for $5k apiece!  They were great to look at!  But he just screwed the tax payer (since it was government).

Actually there is a place in Washington State (the northwest of the the US) that caters to that stuff!  Their motto is "bestiality is best!"

That's how I tend to view Washington, too:   as northwest of the US.   Kind of like how Texas is just south of the US.

Put in Civ IV terms:   "The people of Washington are rightfully asking to join the Canadian empire.   Allow to join?   (Yes   No) ".   You gotta watch out for that culture flip.

Never thought of the Washingtonians that way.  But I am of the opinion - if they want it - let them!  I vote yes.
