custom tech tree crashing game plz help!

hi everyone. I have recently created a custom tech tree, but every time I try to start a new game with a race that has this tech tree the game crashes to desktop rather than create a new game, is this a common problem? or is the tech tree broken in some way? (this is my first attempt at creating a custom tech tree)

any help would be appreciated

hi sqwalnoc!

 

There are a few possible reasons that your game is crashing with the tech tree- you may have created new techs that have no tags/identifiers (ie a completely new imaginary tech); or you maybe forgot to make sure that all the techs are properly connected (ie added Plasma Weapons, but forgot to make them follow Laser V)

 

Your best bet is to start small, take an existing tech tree and slightly modify it and save it under a new name (if you by accident save over a standard tech tree, you can get an 'original' from the Metaverse folder)

I'm getting the same issue, so I originally thought it was my bad.  So I simply copied the Terran tech tree, renamed it with no other changes, and the game is still crashing when loading the map.

Please forgive my lack of detail here, it's been awhile since I ran across this bug. But, I believe that when creating a custom tech tree, the game breaks the link to a required foundation tech on the first tech in the list. Go back into your editor, and check the first tech (alphabetically listed, I believe) and relink it to the correct pre-requisite tech and you should be ok.

I may have the exact details wrong, and a forum search could probably turn up the solution. However, this is a known bug and it has been around for quite awhile.

Hrm.  I've searched for a while, here, and the abysmal search function isn't turning up anything of use.

 

Anyway, I did a file compare using a 3rd party utility.  Inexplicably, Stardock's tech editor added this to Adamantium armour:

 

<Requires>Adamantium Armour II</Requires>

 

That was causing the crash.

...that's the bug, it sets the requirement to an invalid choice. Sorry my details were so lacking...but I'm glad to see you got it fixed.
