Breaking Alliances between other races

Is there any way to break alliances between other races?

Is there any way to break alliances formed between other races?  I hate it when I ally with one race, and that race allies with one of my opponents.  Or, I want to ally with one race, but he's already allied with someone that will be a potential foe.  Any way to do this?

That never works. No matter how much money and/or technology I offer, they will not go to war with one of their allies.

If one of them chose Good alignment, you might try bribing the other to attack the Altarians - the Altarians will almost certainly drag the Good race into the war.

Breaking alliance could be done by spying; shoudnt be too hard; all stardock has to do is totally revamp the espionage system. Just look at my ideas on espionage ...

The Super manipulator works well in this situation. If you convince one to attack the Altarians, then everyone else who is working with them will jump on them, then you take one of the other races that hopped in to defend the altarians, and you have them attack the altarians, then everyone jumps on them.

Eventually you get all the good races and some of the neutrals in a bloody bloody war, and all you have to do is sit back and watch.

I've had a scenario in several games and never had the guts to test my theory.

Given: a "triangle" alliance with me solidly atop the demographics charts and the next two strongest civs at the other points of the triangle. The remaining unaligned civs are scrapping amongst themselves, being digested by one or more of us in the triangle, or in a wound-licking phase.

Question: If I broke my alliance with the weakest civ in the triangle, would the civ in the middle be more inclined to stick with me (and my overwhelming military strength) or more likely to freak out about me being a turncoat and come to the defense of the littler civ, even though that would most likely lead to destruction for both of them?

Swicord, I demand that you have the guts to test that theory out.

All I know is that if the opportunity presents itself to test it, I swear to do so and let you know the results! ;P
