Playing Beta 6a

Bugs, Is it worth submitting any of these:

1, The camera on the main screen, almost every time I zoom in to a ship and rotate around it using the middle mouse button, the camera decides to start moving of its own accord, constantly in a set direction, I can counter this by moving the mouse against the cameras motion but it’s a constant resistance even then.

2, Has anyone else ever had the mini map and half the interface disappear from view, without pressing anything or toggling any options. I saved my game and returned to the screen to find only the bottom most buttons still visible.

3, I realize the economy is more difficult to manage in TA but on debt, after coming out of debt, I was unable to research or build on any planet (including the homeworld), I clicked end turn about 20 times but nothing changed, is this because I was in debt too long or a bug? The status remained unchanged from ‘never’.

Wishlist

A) A setting to enable aggressive colonization/invasion of minor races from the main game setup screen, much like the scenario editor has. This has been a constant wish of many people since minor races were nerfed, in numerous threads, I know a number of players are against it, hence the 'option'.

The ability to add all/more races to a scenario than the standard amount, this was possible in the original Galciv 2 but strangely became restricted in DA, someone even designed a unique modded United Planets screen to support them all.

C) Emergency Debt Relief event or game mechanic. The ability to borrow or take a loan from a race or an event that sometimes fires when you go into debt, could be an interesting RP tool, if you don’t pay back the loan, mercenaries or pirates start showing up at your colonies.

D) Breakaway Colonies, I know this is in DA in some form but in all my games I have never seen it. It would be a really immersive event, if rare, to have a colony of mine suddenly inform me that they were the legitimate government and let a battle for the empire begin, a civil war. Might be based on certain conditions, like you being vastly superior to all your enemies or being involved in a long war that’s straining your empire, having low approval etc.

In relation to my Wishlist item, at the moment the game will crash if you load up a game with more races in the scenario than are possible by standard game mechanics, so I guess if your releasing the editor officially that will probably need addressing one way or the other.

Regarding point D, I saw this in one of my earliest games of DA, happening to the Korx. If I'd realised at the time it would be so rare I'd have kept a saved game and worked out how it came about, as I've never seen it since - but it has happened. There's also the Fundamentalist event, where huge proportions of evil empires can break away and take a "good" alignment - only time I've seen this was in a good v evil races game (DA again) in which good were getting whipped. Unlike Jagged Knife who take a proportion of each race's worlds, they took the larger part of the remaining Yor worlds, including Iconia itself, along with smaller numbers of worlds belong to the Drengin and an evil custom race. The Yor were left with a single world on the outskirts of their own former empire!

Haven't encountered any of your bugs I'm afraid, so can't be of much help there.

Wish C): start trading and you'll not need it.

Wish D): it happened more than once. A new race (minor) is formed with lanets from all races with the technology knowledge of all of them. Thanks Brad it's not aggressive otherwise could wipe out the others.

No similar bug seen.

In response to your list of "bugs," I can't speak for the circumstances under which they occurred, but they all sound like normal parts of the interface to me. The camera is, by default, set to "snap" back to a standard orientation to preserve the relative orientation of the main map and the mini-map. You can change it by de-selecting the appropriate check box in one of the options menus (I forget which).

As for your number 2, this is also a feature, not a bug. There's a button (as I recall, it's purple and directly beneath the minimap) that toggles the info bar on and off. You may have clicked it by accident; if so, just click it again, and the interface will come back.

I can't speak to your number 3; if you're in debt below -500bc it will automatically devote all your empire resources to getting out of debt, which means you can't spend money on anything else. Once you come out of debt, though, it should go back to normal. The real problem is when your maintenance costs are higher than your income, in which case you can just sit there in debt forever (or until your reserve hits something like -5000bc, at which point I think you automatically loose, as happened to me once when I accidentally upgraded an entire class of ships at a cost that sent me instantly to something like -10000bc).

On the bugs:

I have been able to repeatedly reproduce the camera bug, I don't mean the snapping feature, I mean whereby the camera actually moves by itself in one direction after its snapped back into place, of its own accord and continuously after zooming out. It might be due to the snapping feature but its not the snapping reaction itself I am trying to convey in this bug report. I've played through two games with two different races and seen it happen many times on the main map screen, seemingly the only cure to stop it moving is to reload a game. This might make it related to my system or galaxy setup choices, if nobody else is experiencing it.

The debt reaction didn't clear sadly but this has only happened once to me and it may of been down to maintenance costs as you suggest, however I had a positive budget eventually which makes that seem less likely to be a factor, next time i'll remove all my ships and see what happens. It may just be my positive budgets cashflow was too small to support even homeworld development or research; if this is indeed possible, some kind of warning to the player, in the event of this unlikely scenario, might be warranted.

Thank you for the interface button tips, its been awhile since I poked around with galciv's options properly.

>> Wish C): start trading and you'll not need it.

That would obviously help to fix any cashflow problems but those techs take a while to get and by then your already out of the danger of debt and have the initial phases of your expansion taken care of, its only really an issue early game.

Its always been my strategy to buy the first two colony ships and set spending on military low to tweak the other production sliders up, (with aggressively increased taxes of course) in TA however, only one colony ship seems viable with some spending on factories instead, even then your pushing it to the limit and more.

To clarify these are just neutral observations and I am enjoying the gameplay, as always.

Do you by any chance have an Athlon 64x2 CPU?
