...when simply winning is not enough!

First off, I couldn't have done this without the inspiration of the Metaverse League and Wyndstar in particular. Kudos to the master!

Now to the matter at hand.

I finally did it. A year zero win! Granted, it was only against 1 AI and on challenging (my current level) but I'm certain that 'tough' wouldn't have been much harder. On the other hand, it was my first attempt at an 'all-labs' and 'lease instead of buy' approach, so I consider myself proud that I could do it at all.

Here is the link to the character, as a proof: http://metaverse.galciv2.com/index.aspx?g=player&id=14517

For all of you, who like me thought that year zero wins are nigh impossible: Try it! Read the posts about it! It is difficult, requires constant micromanagement, but I found it incredibly rewarding to see that victory screen after 25 - 30 turns. Not the way I'd like to play constantly, but as a change of pace, it's a incredible challenge.

And of course, once you've accomplished your first 'Year Zero', post here and rejoice!

As an edit, I now include the current top score.

Attention new players!
Do not be frightened by these scores! Playing a ZYW is actually really easy, and getting a score close to 30000 points takes just a few tries. These games are usually finished in less than 20 minutes, so have at it. Try the tiny ZYWs first, I find them easier and you might get the unique chance to beat players like neilo or Wyndstar.

Current ZYW record holders:

'expert' ZYW - Gigantic

1) 198450 points - MottiKhan

2) 119000 points - Kzinti Patriarch

3) 109500 points - neilo

'classic' ZYW - Tiny

1) 56700points - MottiKhan

2) 40600 points - Kzinti Patriarch / Magnumaniac

3) 38850 points - Wyndstar

I got one, too. I might work on it later and work on a year 0 win in DL. Here's the DA screenshot...

Not quite up to Motti's level, but close. At least my character is better looking.

No doubt there. That evil Altarian is easy on the eyes.

Nice score Motti.

Thanks, Ferrel. I'm starting to get the hang of it now.

Well, just posted my first Year 0 win, and one thing I find odd is that I get better scores with faster games. Granted, maybe my score just went up since I used Fast tech speed (does doing that improve your research score?)

it doesn't improve your research score per se, but the faster the tech rate, the more you can research in a given time span, and thus the more you can do.

I imagine that would be a short AAR. Research, Build, Kill.

edit: I forgot there is an AAR for one of these by Wyndstar in the Round 6 thread, but it's buried in the middle pages somewhere.

Great turnout!

As for AARs, look for Wyndstars AAR, that's probably the most thourough you will find. Other than that, it's (well, my style at least) only a matter of researching EXACTLY what you need and NOTHING else. And leasing stuff instead of buying - basically you're trying to win before your fund hit the -500BC mark from leases.

I can do early year one...Still working on year zero. I still think it may be possible in DL.

A year zero victory in Gigantic All Abundant?

Is it even possible to move fast enough across the map? I guess you'd need to start right in the middle and emphasize engines.

Year Zero sounds interesting though, I think I'll try it one of these days.

Not bad at all!

I myself am up to 26950 on suicidal, with still 18200 on my usual difficulty (challenging).

Once you get the hang of it, it really isn't as hard as it seemed at first. Ok, so one mis-click can spell the end of it, but there is something fundamentally cool about having to WAIT until the first possible valid submission date for the Metaverse.

Thanks. I'll be shooting for over 30k now. You are right that it really isnt that difficult once you have the process down. Just follow the initial instructions from Wyndstar and others, and then refine the process as you play more games. Maybe I'll beat Neilo's record of 32 at some point!

Pndrev, if you can get a starting planet like i got in my ZYW AAR, and you follow the the AAR, you will break 30K...every time. I have repeated it each time i have such a good homeworld...but you must have those extra research tiles for score and .......

Beating 32900K is not out of the question KP, i know how to do it, but getting the right map to do so is the crux of the problem. If i have to play more games to get the next achievement...perhaps i will get the chance to break through.

If you get bored, try seeing by which date you could have the game won and be out of debt. I gifted the AI a low class extreme world to strand them and was out of debt by either June 1st or July 1st...i can't remember which.

32900k??? Wow, I really need to step up my game...

Edit: Good natured ribbing doesn't always get conveyed over the internet, so I added the smiley for clarification.
