Two slight rule changes for round 5.
Ties for fastest game will now be broken by score. So there will only be 4 points given out for fastest game, regardless of the number of games with equal time.

Ties for high score will also be limited to the 4 points. These will be broken by game speed. In the event of double ties (equal speed and score) points will be given, regardless of number. (These rules are not yet official and may be omitted from the round. It has had discussion but no closure. If there is no objection than these rules will apply for this round.)

We will use the Round 5 thread for our discussions, plus the submission's. Looking back through one thread is far easier than looking back through many threads and posts.

For any discussions on rules please post in the MVL Rulebook thread.

Also there is a discussion about our inclusion into the AltMeta here, The MVL and the AltMeta. Please watch this thread for more discussion soon.

I am really looking forward to this challenge and to the rounds ahead. Good luck to everyone and a big welcome to our new players, i hope you enjoy the league. As always i hope you enjoy your games and i hope you all have safe and happy holidays.

The Commish.

Disable Blind Exploration
End of quote

I'm always kind of unsure what to do with this. In DL under "Game Options:" there is a check box next to the words "Blind Exploration".

I think I've assumed that if Blind Exploration is disabled then the box should remain unchecked and if Blind Exploration is enabled then the box should be checked. This is opposite to the behavior of the other two options which are a check to disable and unchecked to enable. Is this correct?

Also I assume we have adopted that the AI CPU Intensive Algorithms should always be enabled and that all AI relations should be set to "Unknown". Everyone agree with these?

Unknown relations of course. As to the CPU i had not given any thought to that. My feeling was that the Intensive Algorithms were akin to the players difficulty level and so subject to the players choice. Plus stating they be enabled may strain some players Pc's beyond the playing limit, if they use lower end and/or older machines.

I have no preference either way on CPU, i play with it enabled and have done always. Does it make that much of a difference?

And as to your Blind Exploration question Mumble, your assumption is the same as mine.

A suggestion, maybe the OP can have a screenshot of how the current round settings in your games should look like just so no one gets a "Aww, man! I forgot to disable tech trading! Dang it".

Here's what I mean:
DL version:

I can do that if everyone wants. And it don't matter what level you play at....just as long as you play. ;)

Combine the best of both worlds. Include a link for the DA and DL settings screenshots and also write them down as you normally do.
Good idea mate, will do so shortly.

My submission for the round:

Damn its hard to see. How do you get an image to show up larger and not automatically re-size? Its a 2yr, 7200 points, masochistic, cultural victory.

Yes this is a great idea. Both DA and DL should be shown.

This is also one thing to keep in mind when we (eventually) move to the AltMeta. I think in that case it will be easier to have a current round settings screen that looks like the DL and DA settings.

One additional point. I had asked about the check/unchecked status of the blind exploration box earlier and from my question and neilo's response (replies #29 and #30) assumed the box was unchecked. FireBender's image shows the box checked. Which is it?

It is confusing because it does seem that checking the box disables being able to the AI influence areas until actually uncovered. This implies that the text should actually read "Disable Blind Exploration". Perhaps the text was too long to include the word disable. This means that there are probably many folks that have selected this incorrectly. I would say that this is a very minor issue that should be ignored for those already deep into a game but I would like this clarified and then treated consistently hereafter.

So which is it?

I personally think it's pretty clear and that screenie is wrong. Look at it as it's own option, not as compared to the other two. Enabled is checked, Disabled is not.

The issue is that what is incorrect is the labelling of the option. I agree that from how it's labelled as "Blind Exploration" it should be as you say Enabled is checked, Disabled is not.

However the option actually works the other way at least in DL. DA is an entirely different matter that I can't address because I haven't yet installed DA.

How it works in DL v1.4x is if you check the box then you can't see the AI's influence areas in the minimap until you've uncovered their Fog of War. To me this is what the intent of "Disable Blind Exploration" means. Again in DL v1.4x if the box is unchecked then you *can* see the AI's influence areas in the minimap before you've unconverd the FOW.

There is no other difference that I can tell between the box being checked and unchecked so I have to conclude that "Blind Exploration" is the ability to see the AI's influence areas in the minimap prior to the FOW being uncoverd. Taken this way, which is the logical way to take it, this means that it's simply the wording that is incorrect and that Disabled is checked and Enabled is unchecked.

Hence the confusion.
heh, The wording is the issue here I think. I take it as when checked you are exploring blindly, not knowing where your opponent is, hence being "blind" is enabled.

I do think it's confusing because essentially your enabling a disabling of your ability to see them.

I already have one game done with the box not checked, but can change it on my next(and I'll will be doing another)if it's decided differently.
in the future Neilo will just need to say "Blind Exploration on/off" and then we will check our boxes accordingly. I think, hope, that we all understand that B.E. on means we can't see the AI's influence spheres.

Ok, my submission. Not as impressive as some others, but still...

Just bringing to the attention of the MVL that I have sent repeated messages to Velkyn Kyil and have had no response, it is still early in the round so I'm not calling for action yet, but the Eternal Villainy may again end up being just a 4 man team. Y'know...I may have to ask Neilo to stop assigning new players to me, I must just come off to gruff or something ;p

Yeah I have a backup game in the MV under the same situation. As I said I don't doubt a lot of people have made the same guess in this round and in previous rounds. I assume people are OK with this possibly being set incorrectly as not that big a deal, however the way I read it now is that Blind Exploration Disabled requires the box to be checked and Neilo's settings in the OP say to disable Blind Exploration.

in the future Neilo will just need to say "Blind Exploration on/off" and then we will check our boxes accordingly. I think, hope, that we all understand that B.E. on means we can't see the AI's influence spheres.
End of quote

Well what is it for this round then? By that reasoning B.E. off implies we can see the AI's influence area which is unchecked. I'm now more confused than before. As far as hoping that everyone understood one particular meaning I think that's a false hope. The only time I've ever checked that box was when I thought it was called for in one of our past rounds. Otherwise I've never played with the Blind Exploration box checked before and really had no idea of what checking it even did.

Neilo, please make a determination and update the OP to say whether or not there should be a check in the Blind Exploration box. I would also say that anyone that starts a game before this is cleared up *in the OP of this thread* should feel free to submit any game regardless of how you interpreted this one setting.
